1.5 Million People Affected by the Medicine Shortage in Germany

Thomas Preis, President of the Nordrhein Pharmacists Association, stated in his statement to the German public broadcaster ARD that there is a supply shortage in one of every two prescriptions and said, “This means that 1.5 million people are affected by the supply shortage every day in Germany.”

It has been reported that the shortage in medicine supply in Germany affects 1.5 million people every day.

Thomas Preis, President of the Nordrhein Pharmacists Association, stated that the supply problem caused a lot of workload in pharmacies and noted that there were problems in the supply process due to the very low availability of antibiotics.

Stating that doctors in the country mostly prescribe drugs whose patent protection has expired, Preis explained that these drugs are increasingly scarce.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach argued that they will be in a better situation in drug supply this year compared to last winter.

Lauterbach stated that they are in contact with pharmaceutical manufacturers and that the manufacturers are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and said, “Production will increase significantly.”

Pointing out that a law has been passed in Germany against the drug supply shortage, Lauterbach stated that time is needed for the law to take effect.

Lauterbach stated that it is important for pharmaceutical production to take place in Germany and noted that it takes time to build a new facility.
